Causes and diagnosis
After the anamnesis the diagnostic may include the following exams.
Semen analysis
The semen analysis is the gold standard for initial evaluation of the men. This exam does not give a final diagnostic of the male fertility, but investigate the functional status of the testicles. It evaluates:
• The concentration of spermatozoa, which is important due to the spermatic loss in the pathway to the egg;
• The motility of the spermatozoa, important for reaching the egg;
• The morphology or form of the spermatozoa related to the ability for fertilization.
The abstinence before semen collection should be similar to sexual rhythm of this couple. The semen collection is performed by masturbation avoiding semen losses, especially from the first emission containing the higher spermatozoa concentration.
