In vitro fertilization (IVF) with ICSI
It means intracytoplasmatic sperm injection. The spermatozoon is introduced into the mature egg by means of a microscopic injection. This technique is the second landmark, after the birth of Louise Brown, the first IVF born baby. It is a technical sophistication of the micromanipulation of gametes, similar to insert something in an egg without breaking the shell. The micro-needle that immobilizes and injects the sperm into the egg’s cytoplasm has 6 microns in width. Specially trained professionals perform this procedure by remote control, taking less than one minute. The creation of ICSI brought some fantastic scientific advances to the science of reproduction and general science. Utilization of sperm retrieved from testicles and epididymis, capture and capacitation of immotile gametes or even immature became feasible after ICSI. This technique is performed in male infertility cases, when the sperm production is low, rare or practically absent. The male infertility was almost vanished by ICSI. Once the egg fertilized by means of ICSI and the embryo will be under the same regimen of the classic IVF. The risks associated to ICSI are lows, because the treated couples are advised to test for genetic diseases such as cystic fibrosis.
