Serodiscordant couples

Man  HIV +

Recent data from UNAIDS, an United Nations Organization arm for the follow-up of HIV cases in the world indicate the best treatments for serodiscordant couples. However, even with the control of the infection of seropositive individuals the transmission can occur by different ways, including sexual intercourse. The technologies available allow the treatment of the semen of HIV seropositive men, with the separation of the spermatozoon from the virus, for the use of a sample virus-free.

Seminal wash is indicated in cases of HIV serodiscordant couples. The spermatozoon are separated from the seminal fluids and by centrifugation; as the HIV can be found in the seminal fluid and cell, but not in the spermatozoa, it is assumed that the separation of spermatozoa from the seminal fluid decreases the risk of transmission.

There are some criteria for men to take part into this program: they can not be azoospermic, might have low virus counts and adequate CD4+ levels.
