Assisted Hatching

Microassistance to facilitate embryo implantation in the womb (the great challenge of assisted reproduction). For several reasons, including the age of the oocyte, the pellucid zone – a layer that protects the embryo – is sometimes very tough, thus hindering the implantation: the embryo is unable to “leave the shell”. The technique of “Assisted Hatching” is therefore a microsurgery of this embryonic capsule, which can be accomplished with chemical or mechanical means, or using laser beam. With any tools, the goal is to open a passage to the embryo, a small “window” in the pellucid zone.
